Dear friends of the
orchestra, Continuously for 23 years now, this group has presented concerts of music chosen from the chamber orchestra repertoire, much of it not otherwise heard in Birmingham. This season is no exception. On our first concert, October 20th at Bluff Park Methodist Church, Robert Wright will conduct our performance of Gounod's Symphony #1in D Major. To our knowledge, this charming symphony has never been heard in Birmingham before. The same is true for two of the works on our second program, conducted by Howard Goldstein: Masques et Bergamasques by Gabrial Faure and Two Pieces for Small Orchestra by Fredrick Delius. To balance the newer material, though, Lori Ardovino, wind instructor at the University of Montevallo, will solo with the group in Mozart's much beloved Clarinet Concerto on our first program and members of our own ensemble, Dawn Grant and Godehead Oepen, will solo in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante at the Homewood Public Library on November 24. The 3rd Annual Dorsey Whittington Concerto/Aria Competition Concert will be held at Hill Hall at Birmingham Southern College on February 16th. As always, we look forward to working with Dr. Gibbs and these talented students from the music department at Birmingham Southern College. St Stevens Episcopal Church will host our final orchestral concert of the season. Located in Cahaba Heights (another new area for us), the church will be a beautiful setting for our program of 'Suites', conducted by Todd Norton. We will give you directions to the church on the postcard we send out just before the concert. We appreciate your willingness to follow us as we move about the greater Birmingham area, exploring new communities each year. We will close out the season with our traditional concerts for smaller groups of players at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the Birmingham Museum of Art. These programs provide us the opportunity to put together many different combinations of instruments, musicians and composers. Once again, we thank you for your patronage and look forward to seeing you at many of our events this season. We do not charge for our concerts and present them as a community service from our organization to you. All our musicians (players, conductors and soloists) and staff donate their time, and Birmingham Southern College generously provides us a home base, but there are still considerable expenses for rental/purchases of music and for publicity. We would certainly appreciate any contribution you might like to make towards those costs. If you would like to help us save money by adding your name to our e-mailing list, contact our web site at rmco.org and log in your address under 'mailing list'. Instead of sending you a postcard, we will e-mail you a notice. Even if you would prefer paper notices, check the web site periodically for directions to concerts, photos, information about conductors and soloists and links to related sites. |
