Paul Hindemith

Born: 1894-11-30 Died: 1962-11-30

Paul Hindemith figures as one of a quartet of significant composers from the first half of the twentieth century -- the others being Igor Stravinsky, Bela Bartok, and Arnold Schoenberg. Besides significant contributions to opera and orchestral literature, Hindemith also composed at least one sonata for each of the major orchestra instrumentals, a significant body of chamber music, works for stage and screen, and a host of works intended for use in music education. He also made important contributions to music theory, including a textbook on harmony. He emigrated to the United States in 1939, became head of the Music Department at Yale University in 1942, and became an American citizen in 1945.
